Hedonism Vs. Self-Nurturing

Facebook Friend asked me the other day, in an alarmingly frank conversation:

What is the difference between hedonism and self-nurturing?

I wonder about it at least once an hour.

What’s the difference? Probably not much but…IMHO…a hedonistic Pinocchio wouldn’t give a second thought to poor Gepetto in the belly of the whale while a self-nurturing Pinocchio might ask how important Gepetto was to himself, and then act upon that meaning.

Interesting question but it becomes a semantics problem. We all have difft attitudes towards those words.

It depends on whether or not it is pleasure that sustains you. This reminds me of an earlier post you wrote, HH, about how some men are empty calories. In the end, if you eat nothing but candy, well, you know what happens. You need to find yourself some meat and potatoes.

As already mentioned it is all semantics. If a monk prays a lot is that hedonism? The commonest understanding of the use of the word would be ‘pleasure before all else’ in which case it is quite probably the antithesis of self nurturing.

Constance, as usual, you hit the nail on the head.

Mr. C, as usual, you hit the nail on the ass. (and it liked it!)
